Photoshop vs Light Room
- July 11th, 2009.
This week has been one of learning and experimenting!
There are many many shots I’ve taken which are just no good, I am lucky if I have one good photograph out of a possible 500 I’ve taken this week. But it surely is a learning curve and I am certainly not discouraged.
I am going to add, photoshop is a wonderful piece of software, but if you tamper with an image too much it does start to become grossly surreal. Although, saying this, I have been using a new piece of software called Light Room which does do justice to the images - with more controlled subtle settings. The only worry with Photoshop is finding when to stop editing! At least with Light Room you cannot over-do it! (although Light Room does not allow you to re-touch in cloning terms)
Most of my images are saved to my Mac back in Grasmere - I hope to upload more to my flickr account soon. Here is a small selection of images taken this week.

Langdale, edited with Photoshop as you can see there is a halo effect between the sky and fell

Edited with Light Room here I edited the levels and sharpened the details

Edited with Light Room then into Photoshop

Edited with Photoshop using black and white
I am currently looking to buy a new tripod, which is a must have with any kind of photography - so I have recently learned this week.

Hello Sarah. I really like the flowers picture, and there´s something I like about the sheep. I suggest that instead of using black and white in photoshop, work the RAW picture, in photoshop. I like the outcome much more, particularly because of the “Blacks” option, which makes the black and white look more akin to the analogue film´s black and white. There are tons of options to play around with too.
Just wondering, why haven’t there been any more graphic design posts for so long, really miss them, both those on your work, and on your finds, are quite inspiring.
Take care,
Yaco Roca

Thank you for your comments. I’ll try that out - so it’s the ‘blacks’ option I need to play with - is that within the initial RAW window when importing the file into Photoshop?
With working full time it is so difficult to do self-initiated work and not much time for freelance - as you can imagine it is not possible to show stages of client work within an agency with ease - due to client confidentiality. Also, I am still waiting for a phone line in my flat at Grasmere so the only time I get to my own work in progress is the weekend and it’s not much time at all. I hope you understand - I have just added a little graphic number - I hope to do a new section on the website called ’student spotlight’ but currently building up links/references.
Thanks you,
Sarah
