Corrupt is beautiful!

DATA CORRUPTION SOFTWARE 2.0
-
Well i just had to make this post, i came across a fantastic link via a co-moleskine exchanger Hans Weckman.

Corrupt by Benjamin Gaulon

“Corrupt™ was first built with Proce55ing. The corruption process start by reading the binary of an image file [JPG or GIF], then some bytes are swaps [the number of replacement is a random value from 1 to 20]. The file is then “saved as” a new document. Depending on the number replacement and of the original compression, the image will have a completely different and unpredictable aesthetics. So from a single image the program can generate millions of corrupted versions. And because it is a real corruption system that damages the binaries of a file, some of the results can’t be showed because they are too damaged…This online version is dedicated to anyone who desire to corrupt JPG files.

This PHP version 2.0 has been released in collaboration with BlueMelon.”

Also check out his website for the best exploration of visual media, stunning concepts - amazing talent and technology.

I can imagine all the fun to be had with typography - so quickly got round to uploading a little something. The process is completely free, all you need to do is simple upload a JPEG file - Max 500kb.

Have fun!

Visual Illusion

Experimentation for my new website header.

I would like the graphic and headline, ‘a reflection of self,’ to visual appear as if it is moving in a sense of reflection - subtly - without using technology but a strong researched structure giving the impression of ‘magic eye.’

Below are pieces of experimentation. Currently researching works by Bridget Riley.

Another experiment, are the lines sloping?

Trial with type:

Hairstylist Identity.03

Here i have placed the hair underneath a partial cut (the shape of an A to test the effect). The cut was taken down from the top right of the A down to the left edge.

The swirls are really quite interesting, but if i was to go with this idea, the possibility of creating a full word this way may look over done and too busy.

I prefer the little choppy clippings as it exaggerates the outline of the A, but by adding more swirls to the bottom example could produce a more effective piece. The next step will be to create a solid letter and add the hair as 2d swashes.

Fredrik Broman, an Interaction Designer, commented on my last post, saying “it would look even better in colour. Especially if the hair used came from a person with red-brown hair. Black hair on white looks very stark, so i think you should take the idea further by experimenting with different hair colours.” So this i will investigate further, always appreciate advice, thank you Fredrik.

Hairstylist Identity.02

I’m loving the experimentation with the hairstylist identity. Today I produced the word ’stylist’ out of actual hair, below is an example, the letter S (for Stylist). This is another approach to the brief, the next experiment will be achieved hopefully tomorrow, before i make a final decision.

Although this is photographical (looks quite eerie), ideally i’d produce a smaller image, with hair sandwiched between transfer paper, so that i’d be able to scan of photocopy (photocopy ideally for the immense detail).
