Abstraction

Manipulating images can reveal some interesting textures and forms. Using an image taken on a flight over to the Algarve, i created 2 layers within Photoshop, desaturated one layer and selected the colour from the planes engine in the other. The outcome is very abstract, the clouds have turned into dimensional sloping lines and the engine appears futuristic.

Book Jacket

Preparing work for my showcase, i spent today photographing working designs in the form of tabletop photography. When presenting completed work, such as the book jacket, the design becomes real when presented in its entirety.

Showcase ‘08

Creating the ePortfolio (PDF) has been quite invigorating, having the chance to place my own work into editorial format. There are a few final tweaks required before i upload. At present i have the final grid layout, images, page numbers, sub titles and some body text, just those important captions to place and the navigation.

I’m also working on the first page, i prefer to leave the best to last. Here is the typographic treatment i may use to introduce the showcase, other graphics will support this:

I came across this old competition brief - so i decided to have a go:
CMI Logo Design Competition

“New Mexico State University’s Creative Media Institute (CMI) wants you to participate in designing its future. Here is where you come in: this creative institution will soon be printing t-shirts, letter head, business cards, updating their website and sending out memos with their new brand. It needs a piece of identity ware to go with its name: CMI wants a logo.”

Book Cover

With the use of my new ink explorations, a new book cover has been created for “Insulin Murders” by V. Marks & C. Richmond. Giving the book a modern, sterilised appearance. With the book being fact based, a serif font was used alongside the boldness of the photographic image.

"Insulin Murders is the first book on the market to describe real life cases of murder (and purported murder) using insulin (& other hypoglycaemic agents) as a murder weapon. Written by a leading authority on insulin and its use as a murder weapon, this is a gripping account of true life crime, intended for doctors and laypeople alike." (RSM Press)
