Calendars

Pentagram 2008 Typography Calendar Now Available
Pentagram’s 2008 calendar features typefaces designed by Matthew Carter.
Kit Hinrichs has designed Pentagram’s 2008 Classic Typographic Calendar using twelve typefaces designed by typographer Matthew Carter including Walker (originally designed in 1995 for the Walker Art Center), Snell Roundhand (a 1966 revival of 17th century English writing master Charles Snell) and Galliard (a 1978 anthology of Roman and Italian styles of French punch-cutter Robert Granjon). “I wanted to bring a new awareness of typographic design through this calendar,” said Hinrichs. “Typefaces are pervasive in our daily lives in everything we read and see around us and yet most people are oblivious of them or the circumstances in which they were created. We can gain a new perspective on our world by studying the origin of typefaces. I hope the calendar will encourage a new sensitivity to the importance of typeface usage and the work of Matthew Carter.”
The calendar is available in two sizes, a supersize 33-by-22 inch version suitable for wall hanging and a smaller 18-by-12 inch version appropriate for desk use. Both versions are available in the US and UK at kenknight.com. The price of the supersize calendar is $36 and the smaller desk and wall calendar is $22. (Prices do not include shipping.)

Typodarium 2009: The Typodarium brings daily typography inspiration, the first tear-off calendar with 365 different fonts—bread-and-butter types and typography gimmicks, character sets and punctuation, old masters and new wild fonts, favourite fonts from across the world on your wall. The front page, which is classic and functional, shows the date and on the reverse are background and details, designers and reference sources. In this way, every day becomes a typography day and some calendar pages become a font shopping list.
The typography calendar was planned and designed with the Berlin designer Raban Ruddigkeit and is the first publication by Magma with the well-known Mainz publisher Hermann Schmidt.
The following type designers and founders are included in the calendar: 2Rebels, Avoid Red Arrows, bp Foundry, Caketype, Canada Type, Cape Arcona, Christian Schwartz, Coma AG, Cubanica, ds Type, Dutch Design, Dutchfonts, eps51, Font Bureau, Fontfarm, FontFont, Fountain, Hubert Jocham, Hula+Hula, Kenn Munk, Lazydogs, Lieberungewoehnlich, Lion&Bee, Magma Brand Design/VolcanoType, Mark Simonson, Martina Hartmann, P22, Parachute, Peter Brugger, Pfadfinderei, Primetype, Smeltery, Sparkytype, Subtitude, Subcommunication, Typecuts, TypeOff., TypeTogether, Typetype, Typonauten, Typotheque, Underware, urw++, Verena Gerlach, Xplicit, and Yanone.

Type Trumps
Creative Review:
Rick Banks, has created a set of Top Trumps style cards where classic typefaces are the subject matter - hence the name, Type Trumps. Each card is designed to make the most of the particular font it features, and typophiles will happily find such faces as Frankfurter, Times, Helvetica, Johnston Underground and Neu Alphabet in the pack. Type Trumps players can battle it out using such statistics as year of design, the amount of weights, cost etc to win their opponent’s cards. Banks has given each typeface a ‘rating’ score, a ‘legibility’ score and even a ’special power’.

Antonio Carusone for featuring my online portfolio on TheGridSystem.org last week.
Since October I have been trying to think of a way to create a conceptual approach to a simple desktop design. Here is a little feedback I received when I asked my Flickr contacts:
Here are just some of the many responses:
Ben Kimball: not a graphic designer, but as photographer/cartographer:
NatureyPrettyStuff
Self-Deprecating Humor
Maps
Forks
Failures I Learned From
Failures I Learned Nothing From
Intentionally Streaking Things
The Delightfully Odd
Mark Blyth: Neat idea!
Stuff that really needs doing
Stuff that I can procrastinate about
Stuff that’ll never need doing
Christine: Mine would be:
Black and white
To Repair
Sunsets
No work needed.
So as you can see it was very varied.
With the combination of TheGridSystem’s inspiring website and the urgent need of being more organised when it comes to my desktop; I decided what better way than to incorporate my websites Six Grid System into something I could use to get my files more organised and something I could share with other creatives.
Here is the end result using titles which are changeable for each individual user:
So now instead of having one file on my desktop saying the proverbial ‘Sort!’ I will now be able to place my files on my desktop in accordance to type and subject.

I have to say I do love a good grid system, it’s amazing what can be achieved with a few well structured lines! Well Antonio Carusone at AisleOne.net has used his initiative to fill a huge gap in the website and blogging experience for us Graphic Designers; supplying us design addicts with some useful and well structured information!
Hey folks!
I wanted to let you know about a new site I’ve just launched called The Grid System. It’s basically an ever-growing resource site on the topic of grid systems and anything associated to it, like the golden ratio and baseline grids. My goal for the site is to be a one stop shop for all designers to learn about grid systems, how to design them and how to use them.
The site features links to articles, tools, books as well as templates and other goodies. I’ve also added the ability to show the grid that the site was built on, this way visitors can learn about the structure and how it was applied to the design.
I’ve also partnered up with YouWorkForThem to bring a great collection of books to the site. Over time the site will grow in content (I have a backlog of articles and tools to post) as well as features. I plan to add a forum where people can chat about grid systems and design in general, and other small things like wallpapers. Additionally, I’ve created a Flickr group as an extension of the site.
Thanks!
Antonio
